Egypt to host 2025 U20 AFCON after Ivory Coast’s withdrawal

Egypt will host the 2025 U20 AFCON after Ivory Coast withdrew as hosts, CAF confirmed on Tuesday. The tournament, set to run from April 27 to May 18, will feature 12 teams, including debutants Kenya.

Egypt will host the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after Ivory Coast withdrew as the designated host due to unforeseen circumstances, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed on Tuesday.

CAF awarded Egypt the hosting rights based on a strong bid previously submitted by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and the Egyptian government.

Egypt, already qualified for the tournament, has been drawn in Group B alongside Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa. The competition kicks off on Sunday, April 27, 2025, with the final scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Among the 12 participating teams is Kenya, set to make its AFCON U20 debut. The Rising Stars have been placed in Group C alongside defending champions Senegal, 2017 winners Zambia, and fellow debutants Sierra Leone.

The tournament’s four semifinalists will secure spots at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, set to run from September 27 to October 19.
